We’re back in Romans today, chapter 15. Here are a few notes on it:
- This chapter opens with Paul (the author of Romans) telling us we should consider what is best for others above ourselves and that Jesus did this; even though he was God in human form. That’s a pretty big idea that God would consider what is best for us above his own interests but in fact that’s what Jesus coming to earth was all about. It’s mind blowing if you take the time to think about it.
- Next Paul talks about having unity among believers. Unity is not a word many people would use to describe all Christians but if it was something we worked towards it could really help to restore how people viewed the church and God.
- Another negative view people outside of church hold is that Christians are judgmental. Yet, in verse 7 we are to ‘accept one another just as Christ accepted you.’ Perhaps we should work more on our acceptance of people just like they are. Not advocating indifference towards sin but certainly promoting leading first with love.
How would people’s disposition towards God and the church change if Christians were more know for their unity with each other and their acceptance of people instead of being judgmental? What if we viewed other people through the lens of how Jesus views us? Perhaps we would love people more and offer more grace; especially if we knew God would treat us like we treat other people. Ask God to help you see people like he sees them and to love people like he loves them. I have found that praying this simple prayer will change how you view everyone you meet.
