28 June - Galatians 3

Today we’re reading Galatians 3. Here are a few thoughts:
  1. In this chapter Paul lays out his clearest argument that we gain a perfect standing with God only through our faith in Jesus, not by following a set of rules.
  2. Paul quotes from Deuteronomy 27:26 and says anyone who relies on the law (the rules the Jews followed) to gain favor with God is cursed because it’s impossible for anyone to keep all the rules. God clearly says if we break one rule it’s the same as breaking all of them. This is why we have to rely on his grace which is gained by faith in Jesus.
  3. This may leave us wondering why God would even give us the law? Verse 24 shows us the law was given to us so we would realize we need God’s grace.
  4. Paul closes with telling us that we are all equal before God’s eyes.
Does this chapter help you understand the tension Paul’s audience wrestled with? Does it make you more appreciative to know that God offers us grace freely? Isn’t it cool that we follow a God who helps us understand why he works the way he does? Do you value the grace you have received from God? Ask God to always keep your heart soft to this truth. If you’re skeptical and have more questions about this grace thing I would love a chance to try to answer them for you. Please email me at Tommy@tattoochurch.com
