We’re reading Galatians 2 today. Here are a few quick things to think about:
- Paul begins this chapter continuing his description of his life as an apostle for Jesus. He told how all the other apostles (the guys who were the disciples of Jesus when he was on earth) approved of him going to tell the non-Jews (the Gentiles) about Jesus.
- The only thing the apostles asked of Paul was to remember the poor. Which he did; remember all the times we’ve read about Paul collecting money to take to the poor?
- Paul also describes a time when he called out a prominent apostle for getting caught up in the Jewish religious system again. Paul goes on to tell how as Christians we don’t follow the old system but instead gain forgiveness and freedom only through Jesus.
- In the last two verses Paul tells how when we choose to follow Jesus it’s like we are dead to our old selves and then only live to serve Jesus. The last verse Paul tells why we don’t follow the Jewish system as Christians. If the old system accomplished gaining a perfect standing before God then Jesus came to the earth and died for nothing. That alone should show us that Jesus was instituting something new.
Do you make it a practice to remember those less fortunate than you on a regular basis? Do you have close friends who help keep you accountable like Paul did for Peter? Does your life reflect the commitment level Paul describes in verse 20? What practical way can you make positive changes in that direction today?
