Today we’re back in 1 Corinthians, chapter 4. Below you will find a few quick thoughts:
- Remember how in 1 Corinthians chapter 3 Paul had some very sobering words for church leaders? He told them they would answer to God for how they served him and other people. It’s in this line of thought that Paul starts off chapter 4 as well. Paul echoes again that leaders must be found faithful before God. Unfortunately some leaders in the history of the church have not taken this seriously and have instead used the church as a platform for their own fame and wealth. For this we are truly sorry. They shame themselves, other leaders, other Christians and most importantly God. However, we know that they will answer to God one day for their actions. Therefore, it’s our duty as followers of Jesus to live a life that models the commands Jesus gave us; Love God and Love People.
- Paul also reiterates to his audience that it doesn’t matter who it was who taught you about Jesus. Jesus is the focus not the person who taught you. It’s in Jesus that you have become royalty, not through another person. This may sound strange. But elsewhere in the Bible we are told that when we choose to follow Jesus we are considered children of God. Since we are children of God we are princes and princesses in God’s family.
- Paul also points out that he has become “the scum of the earth, the refuse of the world” because people dishonor him for being a leader in the church. Paul isn’t saying this to gain pity, instead he is pointing out how we serve God and not ourselves or other people.
- Lastly, Paul wants his audience to remember to be humble. This character trait of humility is talked about often in the Bible.
Application questions: Would others consider you humble? If not, ask God to help you walk more humbly. (Warning, if you pray this prayer be serious about wanting to be more humble. Humility seems to be a trait God values but gaining it is often painful.) What response do you have to the idea that if you follow Jesus you’re now a child of God and therefore royalty? Does it make you “value” your position more? Not in an arrogant way, but it’s a good thing for us to know God loves us so much he adopts us into his family. This should make us proud of who our “Father” is. You may not have had a “perfect” father figure in life so far but God really does want to love you like a perfect Father. Take some time and think through this and talk with God about it.
