Now we’re in 1 Corinthians chapter 3. Let’s get right to it:
- Paul opens this chapter in what would appear to be rather insulting words to his audience. He tells them that they’re immature and therefore can’t receive the deeper things Paul wants to tell them. Sometimes the truth hurts. Lots of people leave churches because they say; “they’re not getting fed.” The truth is that as Christians we are to grow up to be able to feed ourselves. The church isn’t a “buffet” for Christians to eat and get fat; it’s a “hospital” for broken and hurt people to find the God who wants to heal them and have a relationship with them.
- In this chapter we also read more about unity in the church. Paul again tells his readers that Jesus is the focus and the unifying element in church.
- Then Paul really hits home with some stuff about leaders in the church. He says that leaders are given different opportunities to help people but only God can cause them grow. However, Paul warns that each one “should be careful how he builds” someone up in faith in God. Because leaders will be held responsible for their “work” before God.
- We also read about how if we are a follower of Jesus we are considered God’s temple. God loves us so much that he chooses to reside within us, to help us live life to the fullest. That’s confusing but awesome news!
- Paul closes this chapter reminding his audience to be humble. Again, this is something we would do well to remember. One of God’s favorite character qualities is humility.
How about you: Do you take the time to grow closer to God? Are you learning how to feed yourself? Also, are you a person who strives to bring unity wherever you go? Would other people say that you’re a humble person? Ask God to help you in these areas so that you can live a life that makes him smile.
