Our reading today in the Tattoo Church Reading Plan is Genesis 25:14-34.
- Yesterday we read the lineage of Ishmael (the son Abraham had with his maid Hagar) and today we finished it and saw how Ishmael and all his descendants lived in hostility toward Isaac’s descendants.
- Next we read about Isaac’s sons Esau and Jacob. Esau was apparently a hairy little guy, even from birth. By the way, how strange would it be for your son to be born looking like a mini red Sasquatch?
- Anyhow, one day Esau gave up his birthright to Jacob for some soup. Which is rather dumb since the birthright of the first born gave one the greater inheritance and honor in the family. We’ll see how this plays out in the next few chapters.
It’s interesting that the Middle East is still fighting all these years later and the two sides can be traced back to these two sons of Abraham. It makes me wonder if Abraham and Sarah had decided to treat Hagar and Ishmael kinder what would the world look like? Would their kindness have had a trickle effect in the Middle East and today would it be a place of peace rather than turmoil? This I feel confident of: if Abraham and Sarah obeyed God rather than taking it in their own hands the world would look very different today. Their wouldn’t have been an entire lineage of people fighting against the promised lineage of Isaac. I’m sure they had no idea the ramifications of their moment of mistrust of God. Then it makes me look at my own life and wonder what sort of long term consequences my sins could leave not only on my family but the entire world. How about you? What mark will your decisions leave? This applies to all of us; believer and skeptic alike. The choices you make today shape tomorrow; for you, your family and the world. Let’s make the world a better place.
