Today we’re reading Acts 12 in the Tattoo Church Reading Plan. Here are some things to think about.
- The chapter opens talking about King Herod arresting people who followed Jesus.
- King Herod had James put to death.
- Then after seeing that James’ death made the Jewish leaders happy he arrested Peter and put him in jail.
- During one night an angel came a woke Peter and led him out of the jail.
- Then Peter went to see the other followers of Jesus. At first they didn’t think it was really Peter but then he told them what happened.
- At the end of this chapter Herod has a rather gruesome death for allowing people to say he was a god.
If you look at the history of England there were several King Georges. During this time there were several King Herods as well. If you've been reading with us you may remember a King Herod who had all the infant boys killed trying to kill Jesus when he was born. This was not the same king we read about in Acts. The King Herod we read about in Acts was most likely the same who refused to release Jesus. It’s no surprise then that he had James killed and planned to kill Peter too. However, an angel miraculously freed Peter.
How does hearing about all the difficulties the early followers of Jesus went through make you feel? Does it make you appreciate the freedom you enjoy to worship God today?
