- Today’s reading is all about suffering. I know you’re so excited now but hang in there.
- Peter warns us that when we start living a life that is pleasing to God that some of our friends may not understand and even “heap abuse on you.” It’s simple really, that they can’t understand why you chose to live different than you used to live. It doesn’t make them bad people you just need to take the time to help them understand why you live the life you live now. And don’t be weird! (Sorry there are enough weird Christians out there. We don’t need anymore.)
- Verses 8-11 are nestled right in the middle of this talk on suffering and they are really good. We are told “above all love each other deeply.” We are told give to and serve each other.
Peter is simply saying that as a follower of Jesus we should not expect to live a life free of pain. We don’t choose to follow Jesus because he is some lucky rabbit’s foot who will keep our life easy. The opposite is true. Following Jesus is sometimes harder but I can honestly say it is totally worth it. I guess that old saying our grandparents said is true; “Nothing worth getting is easy and nothing easy is worth getting.” (Wow I can’t believe I just used that line. I must be getting old)
Peter says in verse 10 “each one should use whatever gift [you] received to serve others.” What are gifts, talents or skills that you have? Do you use them to help others? At Tattoo Church we live to help others because God told us to and it’s just the right thing to do.
