3 Feb - Genesis 9:18-28

Today's reading in our daily plan is Genesis 9:18-28. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.
  1. First in this chapter we read about Noah’s three sons. Notice that the writer intentionally informed us that Ham was the father of Canaan. You’re probably thinking so what Ham was the father of Canaan. Right? Well later in the Bible you’ll read how the Canaanites (the descendants of Ham) were always at odds with the rest of God’s people.
  2. We read about Noah becoming a farmer. Then Noah got drunk from wine and passed out. So does that make getting drunk and passing out ok? No. Most Bible scholars believe after the flood the properties of the grape fermenting changed drastically and this is what cause Noah to get drunk but we can’t fully know for sure. This does makes sense however when we read how surprised Noah was about everything when he awoke.
  3. One thing was for sure, Noah was mad about how Ham acted and cursed him and all his descendants. Sounds a bit harsh doesn’t it? But blessing and cursing your children was a natural thing in their culture and somehow a very powerful thing that God honored.
So what can we apply from this chapter to our lives? Don’t look at your dad naked? Well, that would probably be great advice but I think we can go a little farther than that. How about honor God in all we do. One of the things we learn from God in the Bible is to treat others better than we treat ourselves. If Ham was following this in his life he would have showed his father more respect.
