Today in the Tattoo Church Reading Plan we are starting the book of James. James is maybe my favorite book in the Bible, it’s just so practical. In fact, it has often been referred to as the “manual for Christian conduct.” The author James was the half brother of Jesus but did not believe in Jesus before his crucifixion. However, after the Resurrection of Jesus James became a devote advocate of Jesus. If you’re skeptical that fact alone should interest you. So anyway, here are some things to think about from James 1.
- First, let me say that I have a difficult time deciding exactly what to talk about in chapter 1. If you were to look at my Bible nearly the whole thing is underlined or highlighted. That being said I will try my best to keep it short:
- Notice verse 5 says if anyone needs wisdom you should ask God for he is generous and enjoys giving it away!
- Verses 13 and 14 are good to remember. I don’t know how many times I have heard people directly or indirectly say God has tempted them. God does not tempt us to do evil! It is a choice we make.God does give us the gift of freewill to make that choice.
- Notice that James tells us not to only listen to the words in the Bible but to do what it says.
- The “religion” our God accepts as pure is to look after the less fortunate and keeping yourself free from evil influence. That’s the whole reason we started Tattoo Church and why we partner with other organizations to help make our community and the world a better place.
If you’re wondering how you’re supposed to be living as a follower of Jesus then you have started reading the right book of the Bible. The book of James is such a practical book. Like this: Have a problem with anger? See verse 19, be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.
How does God’s definition of “religion” differ from what comes to mind when you hear the word “religion?” If there is any disparity, why do you think that difference exists? How can you learn to love God and love people better this week?
