11 July - Ephesians 6

We’re finishing Ephesians today with chapter 6. Let’s see how Paul wraps this letter up:
  1. In the beginning of this chapter we read God’s instruction for children to obey their parents and this is the first commandment with a promise from God; if a child obeys their parents then they will enjoy a better and longer life. Right after parents are told to teach their children about God and not intentionally make their life hard.
  2. Then Paul has some words for slaves and slave owners which doesn’t directly apply as it did back then. However, if we parallel that with an employee and boss relationship it applies perfectly. As employees we’re to work to the best of our ability for our boss because we’re really working for God. A boss should treat their employees with respect. Paul didn’t write this to talk only about a job. Paul is showing us that we’re to do our best in everything in life because we can find joy in doing our best before God, who gives us the abilities we have.
  3. To close Paul writes about this spiritual war that’s going on in the world. Paul tells us that we should train and be well prepared to fight against evil. He isn’t trying to freak us out but he wants us to know that there are spiritual forces at work in and around us. Which isn’t a new idea. This is what causes us to struggle between doing good or evil. And this battle is why Paul encourages his audience to follow closely to God so they don’t get distracted.
Do you have a difficult time working for your boss? Focus on working for God instead of for a person. Have you ever felt like you had to fight to do what is right? Ask God to help you keep close to him so you can stand firm.
