29 May - 1 Corinthians 10

Today we’re continuing in the book of 1 Corinthians; chapter 10. Here are a couple thoughts:
  1. This chapter starts out with a reminder to learn from how the Israelites kept turning their back on God. This is referencing Moses leading the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, recorded in the book of Exodus. After being freed from the bondage of slavery the Israelite people often complained against their leader, Moses, and against God. They often wanted to go back to slavery where at least they knew what to expect. They often even diverted their worship back to old false gods. Paul warns his readers not to live such fickle spiritual lives like the Israelites did.
  2. Verse 13 should be very encouraging for us to realize that we will not come across any temptation that God will not help you with if you ask him.
  3. Paul ends this chapter reminding them (and us) that we have ultimate freedom when we choose to follow Jesus. However, we still should stay away from things that will hinder us from growing closer to God. Also, “Nobody should see [their] own good, but the good of others.” This reminds us to love others above ourselves.
Questions for you to reflect on: Do you seek the good of others over yourself?  Do you sometimes turn your back on God to indulge in a favorite sin? In verse 13 we learned that God will give us victory over any sin if we will ask for his help. Ask God to draw you closer to him and help you overcome the things that are holding you back.
