We’re back in Genesis today, chapter 32:22-32. Let’s jump right in.
- Then we read about Jacob wrestling with God.
- During this wrestling match Jacob showed how strong he was. Then as was common for his forefathers, God changes Jacob’s name, to Israel.
- Jacob’s name change is why the nation of Israel has it’s name today. Israel means “you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” At least Jacob got a pretty cool name.
This is a very interesting passage in the Bible; that the Divine would physically wrestle with the mortal? It’s shocking, scandalous even. And it proves God’s desire to be close with us. It’s crazy but God loves us so much and wants a relationship with us. Not some mindless following of a list of stupid rules but a real relationship. How does that make you feel? If you’re skeptical is this shocking for you? Maybe hard to believe? I understand, it’s still hard for me to believe all these years later. Are you a follower of Jesus? Do you really grasp that the Divine wants to have a close relationship with you; like every moment of every day? Think about that! Every moment of every day! Wherever you’re at today on your spiritual journey take a full 5 minutes right now and close your eyes and think about the truth that the Divine wants to be close to you. The Divine is willing to wrestle with you. The Divine wants to be your best friend. Jesus is offering your a new start to do life with him. Will you take that offer seriously?
