13 Feb - Luke 3

Welcome back to Tattoo Church’s Reading Plan. Today we are continuing in the book of Luke; chapter 3. Think over these points:
  1. Once again Luke lists a ton of names for us to make the time in history that this took place.
  2. We read about John the baptist “preparing the way” for Jesus. John went all over telling people they needed to be baptized and he did it in quite a colorful way, yet they still came out in crowds. Being “baptized” is a sort of ceremony done when you want to follow Jesus. You’re lowered in water to symbolize being buried. Sounds crazy right? But it’s really a beautiful thing. Jesus tells us we can find new life in him so he set up baptism to be the thing we do to remember we have a new life in God.
  3. People asked John what they should do and he gives a variety of advice depending on the person but in can be summed up as this; Love your neighbor as you love yourself, Love People. Hmm . . . where have I heard that before?
  4. Then we see that Jesus was baptized by John and afterwards a dove lands on him to show the people God was with him. God himself speaks to affirm Jesus is his son.
  5. Luke ends the chapter with giving the genealogy of Jesus. This is important because there were prophecies that were written many years before and one of which said the Messiah would be from the lineage of David. Luke records not only back to David to confirm the lineage of Jesus but goes all the way back to the first man created by God. I guess Luke was an overachiever.
Isn’t it interesting that John was the fore-bearer of Jesus and when people asked what they should do in response to his message he would tell them to be baptized and to love each other. He was preaching exactly what Jesus would tell his disciples to teach after he was gone. The message is the same today.

How about you, have you been baptized in Jesus? If you have questions about baptism we would love to answer them. I’d love to talk with you. Tommy@tattoochurch.com
