1 Feb - 1 Peter 3

Today we are reading 1 Peter 3 in the Tattoo Church Reading Plan. Here are some points of interest and some questions to think about:
  1. I believe the first 10 words in 1 Peter 3 are some of the most abused words in the Bible. Does God tell wives to submit to their husbands? Sure, but let’s face it most of us husbands don’t deserve to lead our families. Husbands are told elsewhere to love their wives just as Jesus loved the church and gave himself up for her. I imagine if men loved their women like this it would be a lot easier for women to read the first 10 words. SO, let’s summarize it for both sexes . . . love your spouse like Jesus loves you!
  2. Starting in verse 8 it applies to everyone again, married or not. “Live in harmony with one another.”
  3. Peter also tells us to always be ready to tell others the reason for the hope you have.
  4. Peter ends with talk about baptism. Baptism is an event where someone lowers you into water (kind of like when a guy dips a girl in a slow dance). Baptism is what a person who has decided to follow Jesus does to symbolize what God has done for them; how God has washed all the wrong stuff away and they are clean again. Baptism is a new start on life.
This is one packed passage of the Bible. The truth is most marriages could benefit from both parties learning to love each other like Jesus loves them. I really do not want to miss a couple more points concerning verse 15. Peter telling us to be ready to explain our “hope” to others assumes we will lead lives that will cause people to ask doesn’t it?

Has anyone ever asked you in some way about your “hope?” How did you explain it? It’s really just your story, so don’t get nervous. Just explain how following Jesus has made a difference in your life. What about baptism? Have you ever been baptized? Do you have questions about what it is? Why to do it? We at Tattoo Church would love to answer those questions for you. Tommy@tattoochurch.com
